I’ve become just a little bit obsessed with the iced matcha latte at Starbucks. I already liked matcha green tea, but the yummy iced latte version is so refreshing and smooth! Unfortunately, the Starbucks version costs around $5 a pop, and (the worst part) it has 33 grams of sugar! Yuck! Matcha has tons of health benefits, so here is my sugar-free, EASY TO MAKE version of the drink (with no artificial sweeteners). You’re gonna love it!
Benefits of Matcha Green Tea
Matcha green tea has caffeine, but it is not a jittery caffeine like with coffee. In fact, it has calming properties. So you get the energy and the calm together. Boom! It is also an immune-system booster, and helps your memory and concentration. Finally, it is a great source of antioxidants, which are powerful anti-aging superheroes.
This iced latte version is smooth, creamy, delicious, and refreshing on hot days!
Yummy Sugar-Free Iced Matcha Latte Recipe (20 oz.)
Just 4 ingredients!
- 12 oz. milk of your choice (I prefer unsweetened vanilla coconut milk)
- 1 – 2 tsp. matcha green tea powder
- Stevia powder (an all-natural calorie-free and sugar-free sweetener)
- Ice
The secret weapon of this recipe is this reusable straw tumbler that also doubles as a shaker. Matcha powder can become clumpy in liquid, so some other matcha latte recipes call for blenders, sifters, and/or milk frothers to get the right consistency. But I say, who has the time (or money) for all of that?! This $14 tumbler gets the job done fast and easy – and you’ll love using it for this drink and others, like protein shakes!
- Pour 12 oz. of milk into the tumbler.
- Measure 1 – 2 teaspoons of matcha powder into the tumbler, based on personal taste and/or caffeine preference (see below).
- Add one scoop of stevia powder (or more if you prefer a much sweeter drink).
- Put on the auto-close lid and shake, shake, shake it for at least 30 seconds! This is the important part for breaking up matcha clumps and also frothing up your milk.
- Add ice almost to the top of the tumbler. Add the lid and shake it all up one more time.
- Insert your straw and you are ready to sip!!
Caffeine content: The matcha powder has 16-24 mg of caffeine per 1/2 teaspoon. That is 32-48 mg per 1 teaspoon. And 64-96 per 2 teaspoons. For comparison, an 8 oz. cup of coffee has between 95-200 mg of caffeine, depending on the brand/brew. A Starbucks venti (20 oz) blonde roast coffee has 475 mg of caffeine.
Why This Recipe Rocks (and the tumbler too)
- This recipe has less than half the calories, and no sugar! The Starbucks version of this drink has 220 calories and 33 grams of sugar (with coconut milk). It has been called out for being over 50% sugar, which absolutely ruins a healthy green tea beverage. My recipe has approx. 95 calories and 0 grams of sugar! (The exact amount of calories depends on the milk you choose, but 12 oz. of unsweetened vanilla coconut milk has 60-75 calories depending on the brand. 2 tsp. of matcha powder has approx. 20 calories. Stevia has zero calories.)
- This recipe costs way less! The Starbucks drink is around $5 for a venti size iced matcha latte with coconut milk. My recipe costs approx. $1.48 per 20 oz. serving (66 cents for 12 oz. of coconut milk, 80 cents for 2 tsp. of matcha, and 1.5 cents for a scoop of Stevia powder). Your exact cost depends on the milk you use and the cost at your local market. (I calculated my $1.48 cost with coconut milk.) Now, just add $14 for the tumbler, but you can reuse it over and over and over again for all kinds of drinks!
- The auto-close shaker plus straw lid tumbler is awesome! It easily converts back and forth between a sealed shaker lid and a straw lid. When the straw is removed from the lid, it automatically seals shut. If your matcha latte sits still for a while and the powder settles towards the bottom, you can use the straw to stir it around, or take out the straw and re-shake your drink. Boom! It is so perfect for any drinks that you shake, it is easy on the easy, and great to take on the go.
